William Hugh Vanderhoof

William passed away peacefully on September 7th, 2026 at the age of 90. He resided in Churchville, NY. He is predeceased by his father, Hugh Vanderhoof, his mother, Helene Vanderhoof, and sister, Jane LeBlanc. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Joan, three children; James (Lori) Vanderhoof, Susan (David) Chauncey, and Daniel (Amy) Vanderhoof, grandchildren; James (Taylor), Emily, Andrew (Erin), Matthew, Morgan (Paul), Sydney (Jake), and Zachary, five great grandchildren, sister, Marcia Ritchlin, and other beloved family and friends.

Bill had a good life being raised in Elba, NY, graduating from Hobart College with a Bachelor of Science degree, University of Rochester with a Master in Education and Bowdoin College with a Master in Mathematics. While at Hobart, he was a Center and Defensive Tackle on the undefeated football team of 1957. He earned the most improved player that year and was awarded Outstanding Player of Genesee County by the Notre Dame Alumni Club. Bill was a lifelong teacher to everyone. His teaching career began in Oakfield-Alabama (1958-1960) and moved to Gates-Chili (1960-1993) where he taught mathematics in high school and chaired the mathematics department. In the ‘60s, he was line coach for the football team. While his children were in school, Bill was Scoutmaster and then was elected to the Churchville-Chili School Board. He served for 20 years and had 2 terms as President. Bill and Joan enjoyed spending time in Florida at their condo on Siesta Key. Bill was on the condo board of managers for many years. Bill was also an active member of Union Congregational United Church of Christ in Churchville, NY.

Bill had many talents and hobbies. He raised and showed St. Bernards, was an avid golfer, reader, woodworker and chess player. Bill was also a nature lover. He enjoyed gardening, birding, and fishing with his children and grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Highland Hospital for the wonderful care Bill received. A memorial service will be held on Friday, Oct. 2nd, 2026 at 11 a.m. at Union Congregational United Church of Christ 14 North Main St. Churchville, NY 14428.
