Thomas Joseph Geen, Sr. (1944 – 2025)Passed away peacefully on November 5, 2025, at age 81, after enduring the challenges of Dementia, in Rochester, NY.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rosemary Sweeney Geen. They raised 4 children in Brighton, son T.J. (Renee), daughters Sheila (John Hohman), Kerry (Christopher Sherman), and Sara (Luke Banach). Tom and Rose were blessed with grandchildren: Thomas III, Hannah, Carley, Melissa (Justin) Malec, Matthew (Sydney) Fletcher, Forristal, Charles, and Henry Sherman, John, and Joseph Hohman, and four great-grandchildren. Also survived by sisters-in-law Margaret Geen, Carol Sweeney, Mary Sweeney, Janet Sweeney, and Kathy Sweeney, many nieces and nephews, and cousins Fritz (Virginia) Geen, Michael (Belinda) Geen, and Patricia Geen. Tom is also survived by his loyal family dog, Bella.
A lifelong Rochester resident, Tom grew up in Brighton and graduated from McQuaid High School. He married Rosemary Sweeney in 1965. Tom supported his family as a union electrician with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 86, working for many years as a Master Electrician for the Monroe County Parks Department. He is credited with engineering and installing the infrastructure for the modernization of the Lilac Festival at Highland Park. Tom volunteered in the Brighton Fire Department starting in 1964 and held various leadership roles, including Battalion Chief. He took great pride in the work of the fire department and the close friendships he formed with his firefighting colleagues. He was a long-time active member of the Irondequoit Bay Fish and Game Club. He enjoyed fishing on Honeoye Lake and the St. Lawrence River and deer hunting in the Southern Tier. Tom loved music and was an amazing dancer. He loved volunteering in various ways, including The Supper Club of Blessed Sacrament Church with his extended Geen family. When his children started families of their own, Tom was renamed “Bop” by Thomas J. Geen III, and this name stuck for all of his grandchildren. In retirement, he enjoyed spending time with Rosemary at their cottage on Honeoye Lake.
Though the final years of Tom’s life were marked by the challenges of dementia, there were flashes of his quick wit, love of music, and compassion for others, until the very end. We are forever grateful to our friends who helped care for Tom: Cathy Howe and Collette McGuigan, and for the care he received from the team on Hope 2, of Monroe Community Hospital.
Tom is predeceased by his parents, Mary Hanna Geen and Edward Geen, sister Maryann Geen, brothers Robert Geen and William Geen, sisters-in-law Bette and Barbara Geen, and son-in-law Christopher Sherman. Tom is also predeceased by in-laws Frank and Marion Sweeney, Frank Sweeney, Maryanne and Jack Landers, Joan Sweeney, John Sweeney, and Bob Sweeney.
