Michael Ray Lewis, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away on March 24, 2026, at the age of 77. Born on August 14, 1948, in Ashland, Kentucky, Michael was the son of the late Billie Joe and Ruby Lee (May) Lewis.
Michael's life was a tapestry of education, service, dedication, and love. He pursued higher education, graduating from the University of New Mexico with a degree in Mathematics. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1970 to 1973 as a Nuclear Weapons Maintenance Specialist, stationed at Sandia Base, NM, and the Seneca Army Depot, Romulus, NY. For his honorable service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
Michael dedicated his professional life to the Seneca Army Depot's Ammunition Radiation Program, where he worked as a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist. His expertise and commitment to safety led him to teach Radiation Safety courses and co-author the Nuclear Regulatory Commission License for the Depot.
After retirement, his quest for knowledge continued, and in 2000, he earned high honors and Phi Theta Kappa recognition while studying Computer Technology at Finger Lakes Community College, sharing this academic journey with his beloved daughter, Bonnie Jean.
A man of many interests, Michael found joy in life's simple pleasures. He was a 50-year member of the Waterloo American Legion, where he fostered lifelong friendships and served his community with pride. He was an avid NASCAR fan. In his retirement, Michael embraced various roles, including security guard, bus driver, and computer repairman, which kept him connected to the community he loved.
Traveling with his wife, Gloria, and attending "church" on Sundays with his closest friends brought him great joy and fulfillment. His wit, humor, and kindness will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Michael is survived by his wife of 25 years, Gloria, daughter Stephanie Sanger, stepchildren Dan (BreeAnn) Erb, Ben (Laura) Erb, brother Edward Lewis, sisters Tammy Rogers and Laura Dunahoo, three stepgrandchildren, Lily, Aria and Teghan, several nieces and nephews and his loyal guard dog, Zoey.
Preceded in death by his parents, stepmother Jean Lewis, brother William Galloway, and daughter Bonnie Jean Lewis, Michael's life was a testament to resilience and grace in the face of loss.
Burial will be held at the Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery in the Spring, where friends and family are invited to gather.
