Michael "Mike" Lamphier, 63, of Kanona, New York, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2026.
Born on January 10, 1963, in Hornell, New York, Mike was a lifelong resident of the area and a man whose work ethic, kindness, and love for his family left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Marinda Lamphier, and by his sisters, Barbara Sanford, Peggy Sanford, and Rosalie Drew.
He is survived by his four children, Christopher Lamphier, Amanda Lamphier, Gabrielle Lamphier, and Aaron Lamphier; his brother, Robert Lamphier; his sister, Jeanette Miles; his former partner, Kimberly Lamphier; his grandchildren, Aiden, Kaylynn, Jason, and Killian; and many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
Mike's strong work ethic was evident from an early age. He began working at just 15 years old and took great pride in providing for his family throughout his life. He spent 20 years with Graebel Van Lines before taking a position as a cook at his mother-in-law's restaurant—a job he genuinely loved and spoke about with fondness for years afterward. He later found his calling in sterile processing, first at St. James Hospital and eventually at the Bath VA Medical Center, where he served as Lead Sterile Technician until the end of his career. His dedication, reliability, and willingness to help others earned the respect and admiration of his coworkers and friends.
Outside of work, Mike embraced life through the things he loved most. He found peace while fishing and camping, took pride in gardening and preserving the food he grew, and delighted in baking, grilling, and smoking meals to share with those he loved. Some of his happiest days were spent enjoying family picnics at Stony Brook State Park.
Mike had a lifelong passion for music and built an impressive collection of records, cassette tapes, 8-tracks, and CDs. His knowledge of music was remarkable—he could identify countless artists and songs after hearing only a few notes. He also enjoyed watching his favorite YouTube videos and was an avid comic book collector whose shelves reflected a lifetime of reading and appreciation for the stories he loved.
Perhaps one of Mike's greatest gifts was his ability to tell a story. A talented writer with a vivid imagination, he could transform even the simplest everyday event into something captivating. His humor, creativity, and unique perspective made every conversation memorable, and those who knew him will forever treasure the stories he shared.
Mike will be remembered as a hardworking man, a devoted father, a loyal brother, a caring grandfather, and someone who found joy in life's simple pleasures. His legacy lives on in the lessons he taught, the memories he created, and the love he gave so freely to those around him. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In accordance with Mike's wishes, there will be no funeral services. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, with details to be shared with family and friends.
