Joan M. Spike

MT. MORRIS: Joan M. Spike passed away on July 31st in the Livingston County Rehabilitation and Nursing facility surrounded by her family.

She was born on February 17, 1935 in Monroe County to the late Helen and Arthur VanNeel. 

Joan lived most of her life in Canaseraga after moving from Hilton and was a member of the Legion Auxiliary and Larger Parish Church for many years. Between raising her 5 children, Joan worked at Westinghouse, Sonyea Developmental Center, and Swain Ski Resort. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family. Around town, Joan was best known for her ready smile. She was always there to lend a hand to the community, especially when it came to baking her famous bread and cookies for the various events.

Joan is predeceased by her husband Howard (2017) after 59 years of marriage; son Ricky Lewis; step-father William Cooper; step-mother Doris VanNeel; sister Bonnie Marinelli, and brother Gary VanNeel.

Surviving family members are 2 daughters: Cheryl Nisbet of Geneseo; Debra (Michael) Coyle of Virginia; 2 sons: Robert Spike of Florida; Gary (Mena) Spike of Canaseraga; sister Carol Ziegler of Spencerport; sister Billie Weaver of Spencerport; brother Ronnie (Joann) VanNeel of Florida; sister Sandra Ross of North Carolina; brother Terry (Lisa) Cooper of Watkins Glen; many in-laws; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Per Joan’s wishes, she will be placed to rest alongside her husband Howdy at the Canaseraga Cemetery in a private burial.
