Gary Neil Neuderfer, 75, passed away on September 13, 2025, in Rochester, New York. A devoted scientist, educator, and family man, Gary lived a life marked by curiosity, service, and an unwavering commitment to understanding the natural world.
Born on February 5, 1950, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Gary grew up in the nearby town of Manchester. It was there that his lifelong fascination with nature began to take root. After graduating from high school in Manchester, he pursued his passion for the environment at Michigan State University, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Fisheries and Wildlife.
Gary dedicated his professional life to ecological research and environmental stewardship. As an ecologist and aquatic biologist with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC), he spent his entire career investigating water quality issues and fish mortalities across the state. His work contributed significantly to the understanding of aquatic ecosystems in New York and beyond. Among his many accomplishments was publishing research on the toxicology of lampricides in the Lake Champlain watershed—an important contribution to preserving aquatic health.
After retiring from NYS DEC in 2007, Gary continued to share his knowledge and enthusiasm as an adjunct professor at SUNY Brockport. There, he taught entomology—the study of invertebrates—and inspired countless students with his deep love for bugs. Gary mentored at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Capstone Program, playing a key role in guiding students through real-world projects, helping them bridge the gap between academic theory and practical application. He was known for his boundless energy when discussing insects and could talk your ear off about them with infectious excitement.
Gary's scientific mind never rested. Even after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, he approached his condition with characteristic resolve and curiosity. He participated in multiple research studies through the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) and the School of Nursing to contribute to Alzheimer’s research—continuing his lifelong mission of advancing science for the greater good.
Outside of his professional pursuits, Gary was affectionately known as “Mr. Fix-It.” Whether it was repairing appliances, building decks, or constructing garden beds, Gary had a knack for solving problems with creativity and precision. Friends and family knew that if something broke or needed building, you called Gary before anyone else.
He also found joy in fishing year-round—whether casting a line into open water or ice fishing during winter months—and took great pleasure in tinkering around the house and yard. But above all else, Gary cherished time spent with his family.
He is survived by his beloved wife Judith Neuderfer; daughter Laura Peterson and her husband Dan Peterson; son Brian Neuderfer; and grandchildren Nathan Peterson, Abigail Peterson, and Claire Neuderfer. His legacy lives on through them—as well as through the many students he mentored and colleagues he inspired throughout his career.
Gary Neil Neuderfer will be remembered for his intellect, generosity of spirit, hands-on ingenuity, and enduring love for both science and family. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and inspiration to those who continue the work he so passionately pursued.
A Celebration of Life is being planned for mid-October 2025.
