Dorothy Doane

Dorothy Shaw Doane, age 94, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. Dorothy was born in the Bronx, NY on March 28, 1931, and was raised in Garden City, Long Island.

A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Dorothy lived a life defined by care, generosity, and deep commitment to those she loved. She was predeceased by her husband, Bruce, of 69 years. Together they built a home filled with love, laughter, and warm hospitality.

Dorothy earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Alfred University and was a nursing instructor at Broome Community College for over 20 years. She was dedicated to teaching future nurses, guiding her students with encouragement, compassion, and mentorship.

Her greatest joy was time spent with her children and grandchildren, creating traditions, sharing stories, and offering unwavering support. Her home was a gathering place, known for lively conversations, beautifully set tables, and the feeling that everyone was welcome.

Dorothy found great joy in fellowship and especially loved playing bridge, gardening, entertaining, and spending time with friends. She also enjoyed traveling, embracing new places and experiences with curiosity and enthusiasm, often returning home with stories to share and memories to treasure.

She is survived by her four daughters, Nancy Doane (Ed), Sue Kurtz, Kathy Weiss (Gary), and Cindy Doane (Keith). She is also survived by her eight grandchildren, Mica, David, Emma, Kate, Jack, Kayla, Zach, and Christopher, and her seven great-grandchildren. Dorothy’s legacy lives on in the family she cherished and will be remembered for her kindness, strength, generosity, and the spirited way she lived her life.

As we honor Dorothy’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral or memorial service. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to her compassionate caregivers. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in her memory to The Foundation of the National Student Nurses' Association, Inc. – Funding Future Nurses (FNSNA.org).
